Harvey & Irene Wrightman

Workshop

Tufa & Trough Planting
Cost $25 for one or both workshops,
plants & supplies extra.

Tufa Planting Workshop - the Wrightman's most popular workshop. Participants bring their own piece(s) of tufa (purchase tufa at the May CRAGS plant sale!) and choose the plants for growing on it. The Wrightmans provide planting instruction and the same first-class rooted cuttings they use themselves in the nursery, including kabschia saxifrages, Primula allionii, and other mat and bun forming plants. All tested for growing on tufa. This is a rare opportunity to create your own tufa masterpiece. Rooted cuttings will be available $3 each.

Trough Planting Workshop - Gardening in containers continues to draw more people into the field of alpine gardening. Bring your own trough or pre-order a REAL tufa trough from Wrightman Alpines before June 15.
Available troughs on their website: www.wrightmanalpines.com

Materials will be available for a finished planting - plants, soil, tufa and tufa gravel.

Registration fee for one or both workshops, $25. Plants and some supplies extra.

Plant Sale

Thursday September 10
5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Plant Sale

Have extra plants in need of a home? Looking for plants to fill the gaps? Come to the plant sale in the parking lot before the meeting! Bring plants you have to sell, or come to shop. (Or do both—it's not too late to plant alpines.) Get advice on your purchases during the Grower's Forum.

It will be up to individuals to collect money for their sales. CRAGS would appreciate a 10% donation of your profits, or plant donations for our raffle.

Update: Roger Barlow (Beaver Creek Greenhouses) will be here with plants for sale, including some surprises! Roger will also be a Gardener's Forum panelist.

Grower's Forum

Last year's Grower's Forum was so successful, CRAGS has decided to stage another. We have again asked our local specialty nurserymen from Rundlewood Garden, Llyn Strelau and Rodney Shaver, to moderate and field questions. Rob Staniland, renowned for his garden's water system (especially the moraine) and knowledge of soils has also agreed to answer questions. Stephanie Ferguson will provide general alpine and steppe plant expertise. Guest alpine nurseryman Roger Barlow will add his expertise to the panel.

This is an ideal opportunity to get those nagging questions answered: woodland plantings, soil composition, crevice garden construction, blooming Aquilegia jonesii. Anything that comes to mind... Hopefully your questions will stimulate discussion and debate. Plants are as different as people, and a problem in gardening may have many solutions.

Write your questions down and come prepared!

Becky Simrose

Wildflowers of Andalusia Spain

Recently returned from a family hiking vacation in Andalusia, Becky Simrose has been persuaded to share her photographs and impressions of the native plants she saw there. Andalusia is an area with a very rich flora and many of the plants found at higher altitudes are growable outside in Calgary.

Andalusia makes you see Arenarias in a way you never have before. Also, look forward to seeing orchid species (especially Ophrys) that are incredibly beautiful even though they look like large house flies?!

Lawrence Harder

What Is An Alpine Plant?

Lawrence felt it was time for an examination of the physical characteristics of plants found in alpine regions. He hopes to illustrate how an understanding of a plant's physical adaptations may shed light on their culture.

Expect a thoughtful discussion from a botanist/biologist's perspective with photographs of plants from Lawrence's extensive field study, and herculean garden efforts.
